
PUBLIC
The Wake County Public School System is the second largest in North Carolina and with an academic performance among the best in the country, the County has 49 Schools of Excellence and 61 Schools of Distinction. The "magnet" program has eight International Baccalaureate schools, 13 year-round schools and a number of schools with emphasis on areas such as creative arts, technology or international studies.
PRIVATE
The Triangle area has 59 private schools with the majority in Raleigh. Information about them may be obtained from the N.C. Division of Nonpublic Education website.
COLLEGES
North Carolina has always been well known for its university system and many colleges.
North Carolina State University, located in Raleigh, is the state's largest university. Almost 30,000 undergraduate and graduate students attend this state-supported university that retains approximately 7,000 employees. Over the years, N.C. State, which holds more than 500 patents, has emerged as a nationally recognized leader in science, research and technology.
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill opened its doors opened in 1795, and became the nation's first state university. Today, UNC is considered one of the best educational values in America, and is recognized as such by Kiplinger’s Best Value, Money Magazine and U.S. News & World Report. The University is well known natioanlly for its rich history, outstanding athletics, and their Law and Medical programs.
Duke University, located in Durham, is consistently ranked as one of the top research universities in the nation. This private university supports more than 6,200 undergraduate and 5,700 graduate and professional students and is well know for the Duke Chapel and its Law, Medical, Divinity and Engineering Programs.
